Summary:
A motttled greyish ling, with prominent dark spots or blotches, broadly banded or spotted pectoral fins, pale pelvic fins, and blackish dorsal, anal and caudal fins with a narrow margin. Large adults are almost black.

Distribution

Jervis Bay, New South Wales, to Garden Island, Western Australia, including Tasmania. Adults shelter in caves and crevices during the day, while juveniles are often seen in seagrass beds.

Features

Dorsal fin 144-157; Anal fin 107-117; Caudal fin 9; Pectoral fin 21-22; Pelvic fin 1.
Body long, slender with long-based dorsal and anal fins continuous with the pointed tail. Mouth large, terminal, upper jaw extending beyond eye; a single feeler-like pelvic fin arising below middle of eye on each side; pectoral fins small; scales minute, smooth, embedded in skin. 

Fisheries

Considered good eating, although overfished in some areas along the coast.
