Summary:
A pale olive to pale greyish-brown porcupinefish becoming paler below, with the body and fins densely covered in small black spots. 
Spotted Porcupinefish are covered in long erectile spines, with the longest spines located under the pectoral fin.

Distribution

Occurs in Western Australia from Ningaloo Reef to the Dampier Archipelago and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and Sweers Island, Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland, to at least Sydney, New South Wales, including reefs in the Coral Sea; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Lord Howe Province and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species is circumglobal in tropical and subtropical seas.
Inhabits coral and rocky reefs, where individuals often shelter in caves and under ledges. Juveniles may also occur in mangroves.

Feeding

Feeds on sea urchins, gastropod molluscs and crabs

Etymology

The specific name is from the Ancient Greek hystrix (= porcupine) in reference to the long spines covering the body.
