Polynesian Filefish, Cantherhines longicaudus Hutchins & Randall 1982

A dull yellow leatherjacket with brownish markings, a prominent groove on the back for receiving the depressed dorsal-fin spine, a long caudal fin, and no bristles on the midsides.
The species is possibly only known in Australia from two small specimens collected at Lord Howe Island in 1898 and 1916. The specimens are juveniles and may be C. longicaudus. However, due to their small size and old age, positive identification is not possible (Hutchins & Randall 1982).

Recorded from Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the western-central Pacific - New Caledonia to the Cook Islands, French Polynesia, and Rapa.


To  13.2 cm SL.


Feeds mostly on algae and benthic invertebrates.


The specific name longicaudus is from the Latin longus meaning 'long', and cauda meaning 'tail', in reference to the long caudal fin of this species.
