Summary:
A greyish-green to bluish-grey scad, becoming silvery below, with a large black spot on the upper part of the gill cover and adjacent shoulder region, a black tongue, and a dusky to bright yellow to green caudal fin with a black upper lobe. The adipose eyelid is well developed only on posterior half of the eye.

Distribution

Off Broome, Western Australia, to Yeppoon, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-west Pacific.
Pelagic in inshore and coastal waters.

Features

Dorsal fin VIII + I, 21-26; Anal fin ll + I, 19-22; Gill rakers 11 + 27-30 = 38-41.
Head length 22.8-26.4% SL; snout length 5.7-7.0% SL; eye diameter 7.2-8.7% SL; body depth 36.9-40.4% SL. 
Body deep, oval to elongate oval, strongly compressed; ventral profile strongly convex with ventral margin compressed to sharp edge between pelvic and anal fins. Snout pointed; maxilla extending to below middle of eye; adipose eyelid well developed on posterior half of eye. Jaw teeth fine, upper jaw with two rows of small teeth; teeth villiform teeth on vomer, palatines and on central band on tongue.
Dorsal and anal fins low, not falcate; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly basal sheaths; pectoral fins subfalcate, extending to junction of straight and curved lateral line segments. 
Straight part of lateral line completely covered by scutes, including on caudal peduncle; curved part of lateral line moderately arched, shorter than straight part. 

Feeding

Feeds mostly on planktonic crustaceans and larval fishes.

Fisheries

Although not targeted, this species is taken in a range of small-scale fisheries throughout its range.
