Summary:
A dark greyish butterflyfish with pale green scale centres, a white bar behind the eye, a narrow white line behind the mouth, and a red caudal-fin base with a black submarginal band on the tail.

Distribution |
Found at the Australian territory of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. The Redtail Butterflyfish occurs elsewhere in the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from the Persian Gulf and the Maldives, to Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia. Usually in pairs or aggregations along on reef edges and coral-rich outer reefs. |

Feeding |
Feeds mostly on coral polyps. |
Fisheries |
Collected for sale in the aquarium industry. The species feeds mostly on live coral and may be difficult to maintain. |
