Summary:
A dark greyish butterflyfish with pale green scale centres, a white bar behind the eye, a narrow white line behind the mouth, and a red caudal-fin base with a black submarginal band on the tail.

Distribution

Found at the Australian territory of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. The Redtail Butterflyfish occurs elsewhere in the tropical Indo-West Pacific, from  the Persian Gulf and the Maldives, to Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
Usually in pairs or aggregations along on reef edges and coral-rich outer reefs.

Dorsal fin XII, 25-28; Anal fin III, 20-22; Pectoral fin 14-15; Lateral-line scales 37-40.

Feeding

Feeds mostly on coral polyps.

Fisheries

Collected for sale in the aquarium industry. The species feeds mostly on live coral and may be difficult to maintain.
