Distribution

North of Cobourg Peninsula, Northern Territory, throughout the Gulf of Carpentaria to west of Cape York, Queensland. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific: Andaman Sea off southwestern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Java Sea off Indonesia, South China Sea off Hong Kong, Viet Nam, and the Philippines, west throughout the Gulf of Thailand, and south to northern Australia.

Features

Dorsal fin 67–70; Anal fin 46–51; Lateral-line scales 66-70. 
Body oval, compressed; mouth small,  slightly curved with 1-2 rows of tiny teeth on eyed side of upper jaw. Lateral line on eyed side of head unbranched. 
First dorsal-fin ray not prolonged. Dorsal- and anal-fin rays unbranched. Pectoral fins absent. Pelvic fin neither attached nor joined by membrane to genital papilla. Caudal fin separated from dorsal and anal fins.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin dubius (= doubtful).
