Summary:
A sandperch with three series of large pale reticulated spots or blotches along the sides, a dark greyish-brown reticulated pattern between the spots, and a pale spot surrounded by a black ring above the gill opening.

Distribution |
The Australian territory of Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-West Pacific from the Bay of Bengal to Japan and Indonesia. Individuals or small groups inhabit sandy and rubble areas adjacent to reefs. |

Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin tetra (= four) and acanthus (= spined), in reference to the four dorsal-fin spines of this species (although P. tetracanthus has five dorsal-fin spines). |
