Distribution

Mouth of the Finnis River, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species is widespread in the Indo-west Pacific: Indo-West Pacific: Persian Gulf east to the Philippines, Timor Leste and New Guinea, north to southern China. 

Features

Dorsal fin 35-39; Anal fin 28-34; Pectoral fin 20-23; Longitudinal scale rows 70; Vertebrae 10+16=26. 
Head naked, jaws with an enlarged outer row of teeth; head barbels absent; pectoral fins shorter than pelvic fins (52–74% of pelvic-fin length); most pectoral-fin rays branched; caudal fin rather short, subequal to or shorter than head length; 2–6 enlarged, but not fang-like, canine teeth on outer tooth row of each jaw.

Etymology

The specific name brachysoma is from the Greek brachys (= short) and soma (= body), in reference to the relatively short body of this species.
