Distribution

Known only from the headwaters of Stoney Creek, a tributary of the Thompson River in west Gippsland, Victoria, at an elevational range of 340-545 m asl. The species is confined to a 10 km reach of stream.
Inhabits a cool, small (0.5-1.5 m), shallow (0.1-0.5 m), clear , slow-flowing, partly shaded freshwater creek in a sparsely forested catchment. The substrate consists predominantly of cobbles, with some gravel, bedrock and sand, and instream cover is provided mostly by rock, and by small amounts of undercut banks, timber debris and vegetation overhang.

Conservation

IUCN: Critically Endangered,Threatened in Victoria under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act 1988 (SAC 2014e), Critically Endangered under the Advisory List of Threatened Vertebrate Fauna in Victoria (DSE 2013), Critically Endangered by the Australian Society for Fish Biology (Lintermans 2016).
The major threat to the Tapered Galaxias is invasion by predatory alien Brown Trout, which would lead to rapid declines and the likely extinction of the species.
Additional threats include increasing fire frequency, fire suppression impacts, sediment input into streams from soil disturbance during timber harvesting operations, and climate change.
