Australian Antarctic Territory. Elsewhere the species is circumpolar in the Southern Hemisphere between 33°S-72°S. |
Features |
Females: Dorsal fin 14-16; Anal fin 14-16; Pectoral fin 21-22; Caudal fin 16-17 principal rays; Lateral-line pores 13-18; Vertebrae 51-57. Dorsal-fin base 13.8% SL. Body flabby, naked except for large, diagnostic scales associated with the lateral line canals; body rather elongate, mouth enormous (one-third of body length), head length 30% SL, head wider than body; snout rounded; eye tiny; nasal organ small. Jaws slightly convex to straight on upper, concave on lower; three distinct gill arches with a small slit behind the last; gill tooth plates contiguous. Lateral line conspicuous with large round pores inside a channel with raised rim, lateral pores lack dermal flaps; no vertical rows of papillae on lateral line. Lateral line system continues onto head as a series of pores and sensory openings, additional pores on lower jaw and snout. Cavernous tissue located around the anus, none elsewhere on body. Jaw teeth relatively long (three times longer than wide) in regular rows; vomerine tooth patch rectangular or flat. Dorsal and anal fins positioned far back on body, fin bases slightly elevated; caudal fin with fewer than 17 principle rays; pelvic fins absent; pectoral fins small, inserted low on body. |
