Summary:
A slender pale greyish-brown deepsea herring, with a darker back, silvery below, a pale oral cavity, a dark gill cavity, and a dark blotch at the caudal-fin base that continues onto the anterior caudal-fin rays.

Distribution |
Recorded in Australia from W of Shark Bay to the Northwest Shelf, Western Australia, and E of the Gold Coast, Queensland, to off Sydney, New South Wales. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin gracilis (= slender), in reference to the more slender body of this species compared with that of Neobathyclupea megaceps. |
