A dull olive to silvery black drummer becoming paler below, with distinct longitudinal lines along the sides.

Ningaloo Reef to Cape Leveque, Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, and Arafura Sea east of Cape Wessel, Northern Territory to Montague Island, New South Wales; also Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands in the Indian Ocean, Herald Cay and Lihou Reef, Coral Sea, and Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in tropical seas.
Forms schools in the surge zone around exposed algal-covered rocky and coral lagoons and outer reef flats - sometimes with other species of Kyphosus.
Juveniles may feed on crustaceans occur among floating macroalgae.


Dorsal fin XI, 12-15 Anal fin III, 11-14; Pectoral fin 16-20; Lateral line scales (pored) 49-55; Gill rakers 5-10 ++ 14-24.
Body oblong to elliptical, moderately compressed. Head small; snout short; mouth small, terminal. Jaws with a single row of lanceolate incisor-like teeth. Dorsal fin continuous, depressible in a sheath; pectoral fins short, bluntly pointed posteriorly; caudal fin more or less forked, with pointed lobes. Scales ctenoid, extending onto soft dorsal and anal fins and onto caudal-fin base.
