Summary:
A rare deep-water angelfish with a yellow body, a black head, back and dorsal fin, a broad white bar just before the dorsal-fin origin, and a white caudal fin.

Distribution |
Reefs in the Coral Sea off Queensland, including Holmes Reef and Willis Islet. Elsewhere, the species is known to occur in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia, Palau and southern Japan. Usually inhabits rubble areas on deep mesophotic reefs. |

Dorsal fin XIII, 17; Anal fin III, 18; Pectoral fin 16; Gill rakers (first arch) 5 + 12; Longitudinal scale series 43-45; Vertebrae 24. Scales relatively large, 43-45 in lateral row from upper end of gill opening to base of caudal fin; 37 lateral line scales, terminating below end of dorsal fin and re-appearing on 7 scales of caudal peduncle; maximum body depth 1.6 in SL; 3 or 4 preopercular spines; length of primary preopercular spine 2.0 in head length; tricuspid teeth, about 50-60 in outer row in each jaw; exposed margins of preorbital, interopercle, preopercle, subopercle, supracleithrum, and posttemporal bones serrate; posterior margin of preorbital bone attached and hidden by skin and scales. |

Etymology |
The species is named in honour of Dr. Yoshitaka Abe, the Director of the Fukushima Aquarium (Aquamarine Fukushima) in Japan. |
