Summary:
A pale goby with dark brown blotches forming a bold zigzag pattern on the upper two-thirds of the body, resulting in four pale spots as large as the eye along the back from the below the origin of the second dorsal fin to the caudal-fin base, and black pelvic fins.
This species is tentatively recorded from Heron Island, Queensland.

Distribution

Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, west Pacific.

Features

A species of Cabillus with the following combination characters: dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 9; anal-fin rays I,8; pectoral-fin rays 18–20; longitudinal scale series 27–29; predorsal scales 7–9; prepelvic scales 5–7; posterior oculoscapular canal and associated pores absent; two longitudinal rows of four sensory papillae on chin behind mental flap; body depth 5.9–6.55 in SL; head length 3.35–3.6 in SL; head depth 1.3–1.35 in head width; caudal fin 3.3–3.6 in SL; pectoral fins extending posterior to a vertical at origin of anal fin.

Similar Species

Differs from the other species of the genus in having 18-20 pectoral-fin rays, median predorsal scales, longer pectoral fins, and a distinctive color pattern, including black pelvic fins.

Etymology

The specific name atripelvicus is from the Latin ater for black and pelvicus, in reference to the very dark pelvic fins.
