Distribution |
Outer Great Barrier Reef, Queensland; also Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in eastern Indonesia, the Philippines, southern Japan, Taiwan, Palau and New Caledonia. Inhabits coral and rocky reefs at depths of 30–155 m. |

A small hogfish reaching about 149 mm SL. |
Etymology |
The species is named for Hajime Masuda who collected the holotype and co-authored the book in which the original description was presented. |
