Distribution

Port Phillip Bay and Apollo Bay, Victoria, and southern Tasmania. Due to the confusion of the two species found in Australian waters, the distribution of this species is probably more widespread. Elsewhere it occurs in the tropical, temperate, eastern Atlantic Indo-Pacific. Inhabits epi- and mesopelagic waters in depths to 1355 m.

Feeding

Feeds on pelagic crustaceans, small fishes and squids.

Biology

Juveniles swim near the surface, trailing elongate dorsal and pelvic fin rays, to resemble the trailing tentacles of jellyfish.
