Summary:
A slender live-bearing cusk with loose, scaleless, transparent skin showing the internal organs, small, black, deep-set eyes, a horizontal mouth with a protruding lower jaw and a distinct pair of tissue flaps on the tip of the lower jaw.

Dorsal fin 87; Anal fin 52; Pectoral fin 14; Vertebrae total 80, precaudal 39.. Body slender, compressed with loose, scaleless, transparent skin showing the inner organs. Mouth horizontal; lower jaw protruding with a distinct pair of tissue flaps on tip; anterior nostril with skin-flap, posterior nostril a mere hole. Pelvic fin rays long, 3.5% SL; predorsal length 28.5% SL. |
Biology |
Fertilisation is internal and females give birth to live young. |
Etymology |
The specific name longiventralis is from the Latin longus (= long) and ventralis (= ventral), in reference to the long ventral (or pelvic) fins of this species. |
