Summary:
A slender live-bearing cusk with loose, scaleless, transparent skin showing the internal organs, small, black, deep-set eyes, a horizontal mouth with a protruding lower jaw and a distinct pair of tissue flaps on the tip of the lower jaw.

Distribution

Off Newcastle, New South Wales and on the Lord Howe Rise in the Australian EEZ.

Features

Dorsal fin 87; Anal fin 52; Pectoral fin 14; Vertebrae total 80, precaudal 39.. 
Body slender, compressed with loose, scaleless, transparent skin showing the inner organs. Mouth horizontal; lower jaw protruding with a distinct pair of tissue flaps on tip; anterior nostril with skin-flap, posterior nostril a mere hole. Pelvic fin rays long, 3.5% SL; predorsal length 28.5% SL. 

Biology

Fertilisation is internal and females give birth to live young.

Etymology

The specific name longiventralis is from the Latin longus (= long) and ventralis (= ventral), in reference to the long ventral (or pelvic) fins of this species.
