Heminodus philippinus
Summary:
A pale red peristediid becoming whitish below, with yellowish-green spots dorsally, mostly whitish fins, and two dusky bands on the pectoral fin. The species has 1-2 barbels on the lip, no barbels on the chin, a short triangular rostral projection, no antrose spines (anteriorly directed spine) on the upper lateral bony plates of the caudal peduncle.

Dorsal fin VI-VIII + 18-21; Anal fin 18-19. Body fusiform, covered with bony plates; head large, depressed; snout broad with short, triangular rostral projection on each side, nearly parallel to each other; interorbital region concave with no distinct ridges; head with supraocular, parietal, posttemporal, opercular, and preopercular spines; mouth large, inferior mouth, posterior tip of upper jaw reaching to below anterior border of orbit; villiform teeth in upper jaw; teeth absent from lower jaw, vomer and palatine; lips with 1-2 short barbels, none on chin. Body plates arranged in 4 rows, each with a single, posteriorly-directed spine; plates in upper lateral row lack anteriorly directed spine; anterior 4-5 plates small; lower lateral row of bony plates ending at caudal peduncle, separated from the other side; 4-5 plates anterior to anus ventrally, anterior-most plate the largest. Dorsal-fin origin between first and second bony plates in dorsal row, ending anteriorly on caudal peduncle; anal fin origin just behind anus, also terminating on anterior part of caudal peduncle; pectoral fin almost reaching posteriorly to anus; 2 ventral-most pectoral-fin rays detached, large and thickened; pelvic fin reach posteriorly to point between origin of dorsal and anal fins. |
