Summary:
Specimens of a second species of Ipnops collected in Australia are tentatively named Ipnops murrayi.
This slender black deep-sea fish has eyes modified into large pale flattened photosensitive plates on the head. The eyes lack a lens.

Distribution

Great Australian Bight, South Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Atlantic Ocean. Inhabits soft sediment areas on the lower continental slope and abyssal plain.

Etymology

The species is named in honour of John Murray, naturalist on the HMS Challenger, which collected the type specimens.
