Specimens of a second species of Ipnops collected in Australia are tentatively named Ipnops murrayi.
This slender black deep-sea fish has eyes modified into large pale flattened photosensitive plates on the head. The eyes lack a lens.

Great Australian Bight, South Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Atlantic Ocean. Inhabits soft sediment areas on the lower continental slope and abyssal plain. |
Etymology |
The species is named in honour of John Murray, naturalist on the HMS Challenger, which collected the type specimens. |
