A reddish-orange to greenish-brown scorpionfish with irregular dark brownish to blackish markings, and a black blotch on the rear of the spinous dorsal fin in males.

Endemic to south-western Western Australia, from the Albany region to the Houtman Abrolhos. |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Latin vesperalis (= west), in reference to the type locality (Western Australia), which is also the westernmost occurrence of the S. papillosa complex. |
