Summary:
A greyish duckbill with irregular dark-edged yellow spots and dashes on the head and body, a black edge along the upper jaw, a transparent first dorsal fin, pelvic fins dark medially, and a dusky upper and lower margins on the caudal fin.

Distribution

Coral Sea, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the east-Indo-Pacific: Myanmar, Chesterfield Islands (New Caledonia), Papua New Guinea to southern Japan, Hawaiian Islands, Sala-y-Goméz Ridge (southeastern Pacific).

Features

Pectoral fin 21-23; Gill rakers 5-7 + 17; Lateral line scales 80-87.Head moderately depressed; snout with a distinct inflection; lower jaw projecting beyond upper; maxilla without tentacle. Lateral line originating high on body, descending obliquely behind pectoral-fin base and continuing along ventral side of body.

Chrionema chryseres Gilbert 1905, Bulletin of the U. S. Fish Commission 23(2) [for 1903]: 645, Pl. 85. Type locality: off southern coast of Oahu Island, Hawaiian Islands, Albatross station 3810 [or 3813], depth 183-264 fathoms.
