Distribution |
Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the East-Indo-west Pacific. Inhabits sandy and rubble areas on coastal and inner reefs, sharing burrows with alpheid shrimps. |
Similar Species |
Among other characters, the similar Lady Elliot Shrimpgoby, Tomiyamichthys elliotensis, differs from the Monster Shrimpgoby in having a whitish body with minimal freckling or spotting and large ovate markings along the sides, vs. profuse freckling and spotting and round lateral markings in T. oni. |

The specific name oni is the Japanese vernacular name for this species - Oni-haze (= Oni-goby) |
