Distribution

Southern Ocean south-east of South East Isles, Great Australian Bight, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Indo-West Pacific, from Madagascar and southern Australia, to off New Guinea and Japan.

Features

Dorsal fin III + 15-16; Anal fin I,8; Pelvic fin 7; Gill rakers 18-19; Vertebrae 28-29, trunk vertebrae 12-13. 
Eye diameter greater than width of suborbital bone; caudal-peduncle depth more than twice in length; haemal arch of first caudal vertebra no spurs; Pelvic fin origin beyond vertical of posterior margin of pectoral-fin insertion; anal-fin origin beyond vertical of last dorsal-fin ray.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin proximus (= nearest, closest), in reference to the close relationship of this species with the Atlantic species Melamphaes longivelis.
