Summary:
A pale pink hogfish becoming silvery-white below, with about 25 regularly-spaced vertical pink bars along the side, a yellow stripe from the snout to the gill cover, three yellow stripes behind the eye, a red iris with a yellow margin, and a dark spot just before the pectoral-fin base. The species has a pink caudal fin with bright yellow stripes on the upper and lower margins.

A slender cylindrical pale pink hogfish becoming silvery-white below, with about 25 regularly-spaced vertical pink bars (interspersed with the silvery-white body coloration) from behind the pectoral fins to the caudal peduncle, a distinct yellow stripe from the snout through eye to the gill cover, three yellow stripes behind the eye, a red iris with a yellow margin, and a dark spot just before the pectoral-fin base. The caudal fin is pink with bright yellow stripes on the upper and lower margins. |
Similar Species |
Differs from other species of Terelabrus in having the following combination of characters: 44 longitudinal series scale rows, 42 pored lateral-line scales, 11–12 gill rakers (including rudiments), the main supratemporal sensory canal with 8 branches posteriorly, the area bounded by the main supratemporal and postotic sensory canals (dorsal view) with 3 scale rows, the least distance between the orbit anteroventral margin and interopercle 7.0% of standard length and 18 faint silver vertical bands on the body in preserved specimens. |
Etymology |
The specific name zonalis is from the Latin zona (= stripes), in reference to the numerous vertical stripes (bars) on the body. |
