Summary:
A grinner with a single row of distinct black spots along the upper margin of the caudal fin, entirely dark scale pockets below the lateral line in larger specimens, and a longitudinal row of dark blotches below the lateral line in smaller specimens.

Distribution

North of the Monte Bello Islands, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species occurs in the West Pacific: Philippines, China, Taiwan & Japan.
Inhabits soft sediment areas on the continental shelf.

Features

Dorsal fin 10-12; Anal fin 10-11; Pectoral fin 13-15; Pelvic fin 8-9; Lateral-line (pored scales) 49-52; Vertebrae 49-50; posterior end of pectoral fin extending beyond P–D line.

Size


Biology

Females grow to a larger size than males.

Fisheries

Taken as bycatch in bottom trawl fisheries throughout its range. 

Etymology

The species is named in honour of Umeyoshi Yamada, formerly of the Fisheries Agency of Seikai National Fisheries Research Institute, who first recognized this species as undescribed.
