Summary:

A pale greyish to brownish-red goatfish with alternating dusky-red to blackish and white bars of varying widths, and a dark bar behind the eye.

Distribution	Ningaloo Reef to north of Barrow Island and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, and Ashmore Reef and Cartier Island to northwest of Darwin, Timor Sea, Northern Territory, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Jervis Bay, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Lord Howe Province and Norfolk Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species is widespread in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific: Cocos (Keeling) Islands east to Hawaii and the Pitcairn Islands, north to Japan. Inhabits coral reefs and adjacent sand/rubble areas at depths to 140 m.
Etymology	The specific name multifasciatus is from the Latin multi- (= many), and fasciatus (= banded), in reference to the bars along the side of this species.
