Distribution |
Cape Gloucester, Queensland, to off the Clarence River, New South Wales. Elsewhere the species occurs on the Chesterfield Bank, Coral Sea, between Australia and New Caledonia. |
Features |
Second dorsal-fin spine very prolonged, extending when depressed beyond base of 2nd dorsal fin; pectoral rays 13 or 14. Dorsal fin VIII + 9; Anal fin I,8 (spine extremely short); Pectoral fin 13-14; Lateral-line scales about 29 (to caudal-fin base); Gill rakers 7-8 + 19 = 26-27. Body depth 3.8-4.2 in SL. Scales absent from side of snout; chin barbels reaching to or beyond a vertical at posterior margin of preopercle, their length 1.4-1.6 in HL; 1st dorsal spine tiny, 2nd spine extremely long when intact, extending beyond base of 2nd dorsal fin when depressed posteriorly. |
Colour |
Rosy pink above becoming pink on the sides to pearly white on the throat and abdomen, with; pink colour overlain with gold on the cheeks and gill cover, barbels lemon yellow; iris purple with a narrow silver ventrally; dorsal and caudal fins pink, basally washed with gold; other fins transparent. |
Etymology |
The specific name filifer is from the Latin filum (= thread) and fero (= to bear), in reference to the long, filamentous second dorsal-fin spine of this species. |
