Summary:
A large angelfish recognised by its dark head with a white bar behind the eye, 4-5 dark bars on the sides and the blue spots on the body and fins.

Distribution

Known in Australia from Shark Bay, WA, to the Capricorn Group, QLD; also at Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef , WA, and Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea. 

Found elsewhere in the tropical west Pacific - throughout the Indo-Malayan region to Vanuatu, New Caledonia, the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan, and Palau.

Inhabits coastal, lagoon and outer reef slopes in depths to 60 m. Adults are either solitary or seen in pairs in areas of rich coral growth, whereas juveniles are usually found on sheltered inner reefs.

Feeding

Carnivore - feeds on sponges and tunicates.
