Summary:
A striking grubfish with black or reddish to dark brown blotches along the upper side, alternating with reddish bars on the lower side, the spinous dorsal fin black near the base and deep reddish distally, the soft dorsal fin with a row of dark spots, two narrow bright red bars on the pectoral-fin base, and two dark spots on the tail base.

Distribution |
Clerke Reef, Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef, Western Australia, to Cartier Reef in the Timor Sea, and the northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits open sandy and rubble areas on deep seaward and coastal slopes, and deep sandy reef flats. Adults often rise up off the bottom to feed. |
Feeding |
Adults often swim high above the bottom to feed on zooplankton, usually amongst other fishes such as basslets. |
Etymology |
The species is named in honour of Hugo Hermann Schauinsland who collected the type specimen. |
