Summary:

A blotchy pinkish to greyish triggerfish with a yellowish-pink snout, darkish stripes behind the eye, and yellow fin margins. Adults have a deep groove before the eyes and 5-6 rows of spiny scales on the tail base. Juveniles are more yellowish with black spots on the rear of the head and body, and saddle-like markings on the back.

Distribution	North of the Dampier Archipelago and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, Goodrich Bank in the Northern Territory, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef. Queensland, and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Sydney, New South Wales; also Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific: Red Sea south to Natal, South Africa, and east through Indonesia to the Tuamoto Islands, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia. Inhabits coastal to inner reefs and estuaries, often in silty areas.
Feeding	Feeds on tips of coral branches, gastropods, crustaceans, sea urchins, foraminiferans, and tunicates.
