Summary:
A brown leatherjacket with several narrow dark bars on the midside, often within a pale area. Males have 5-6 long rear facing quill-like spines below the soft dorsal fin, while females have a dense cluster of long bristle-like setae.

Distribution

Rowley Shoals, Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef and reefs in the Coral Sea, with juveniles south to Sydney, New South Wales; also Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific, from the Red Sea and eastern Africa, eastwards to the Society and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan, and south to the southern Great Barrier Reef.
Individuals or pairs inhabit clear coastal and outer reefs, usually in areas with rich coral growth and rubble patches or gutters.

Dorsal fin II + 26-29; Anal fin 22-25; Pectoral fin 13.
Body depth at anal-fin origin 1.9-2.1 in SL.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin scopa (= broom) in reference to the patch of bristles on the side.
