Summary:

This small white leatherjacket mimics the poisonous the Blacksaddle TobyCanthigaster valentini. The Blacksaddle Filefish differs from the pufferfish in having a dorsal-fin spine, longer dorsal and anal-fin bases, the pectoral-fin base in front of the first body saddle (vs behind in the pufferfish), and four yellow spines on the tail base.

Distribution

Offshore reefs of north Western Australia (Rowley Shoals and Scott Reef), Ashmore Reef, Timor Sea, Pixie Shoal, Northern Territory, and the far northern Great Barrier Reef, Queensland and reefs in the Coral Sea, to Merimbula, New South Wales; also at Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and Lord Howe Island in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere, the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific.
