Distribution

Offshore reefs of northern Western Australia  - Scott and Seringapatam Reefs, and the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, west Pacific. Found close inshore around islands and over coral reefs. 

Features

Dorsal fin VI-VIII + I, 12-14; Anal fin I, 14-16; Midlateral scales 40-43; Transverse scale rows 7-9; Interdorsal scales 8-12.
Premaxilla with ventrally directed tusk-like process. Caudal peduncle very slender. 

Etymology

The species is named merceri after Professor Frank V. Mercer of Macquarie University "whose help and encouragement in the study of the family Atherinidae will not be forgotten".
