Distribution

Off Sydney, New South Wales, to south of Penguin Island, South Australia, including around Tasmania. Burrows into soft sediments, usually at depths below 400 m.

Features

Vertebrae 180-186; Dorsal fin originates in advance of the anus.

Etymology

This species was "Named in honour of the late Peter H.J. Castle, eel expert and friend".

Scolecenchelys castlei McCosker 2006, Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand 36(1): 18, figs 1-4. Type locality: Off the Chatham Islands, Chatham Rise, 43°09.5'S, 178°25.4'W, New Zealand.
