Summary:
A pale brown to reddish-brown velvetfish with darker marblings forming four indistinct bars along the back, variegated smoky-grey to brownish fins, pale tips on anterior dorsal spines, very dark pectoral and anal fins, and blue eyes surrounded by dusky radiating lines.

Distribution

Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia, to the Brisbane River, Queensland. The species may occur in southern New Guinea. Inhabits inshore soft bottom areas.

Features

Head bones heavily armoured; interorbital with a wide depression, pelvic fin inserted well behind pectoral-fin base.

Fisheries

Taken as bycatch in trawl fisheries.

Etymology

The specific name is from the Latin dolosus (= deceitful), partly in reference to its camouflaging coloration and partly from the type-locality, Deception Bay.
