Distribution

Known from the outer continental shelf and upper slope of northwestern Australia, from ~170 km NW of Carnavon, Western Australia, to Melville Island, Northern Territory. Demersal at depths of 197-253 m.

Features

D X-XI-I, 10-11 (usually XI-I, 11); A 13-14 (usually 14); C (branched) 15-16; P 17-19; V I, 5; Llat 54-56.

Body elongate, subcylindrical. Head large (length 36-38% SL), bearing numerous spines; eyes small (26-28% HL); supraorbital with 8 spines; iris lappet, ocular and interopercular flaps absent; four preopercular spines, uppermost longest, (supplementary spine variably present), lowermost smallest; gill rakers on upper limb of first gill arch 1-2, 10-11 on lower. Body scales small, deciduous; 54-55 lateral line scales, anterior 4-5 with a distinct spine; 79-85 oblique rows of scales above lateral line slanting downward and forward. First dorsal fin spinous, first spine broadly attached to second spine. Second dorsal fin base subequal in length to first. Anal fin similar in shape, and opposite and slightly longer-based than second dorsal fin. Caudal fin upper lobe slightly longer than lower, moderately concave. Pectoral fins longer than caudal fin.

Size

Attains a maximum standard length of least 24 cm.

Colour

In preservative: Head and body light brown with small darker brown spots, some specimens with a dark band below the middle of dorsal fin and on caudal peduncle. Caudal fin with a large dark spot in lower lobe, narrow dark band on dorsal edge; pectoral lacking small black blotch near tip of upper rays; pelvic and anal fin pale. First dorsal fin usually bearing a large dusky spot anteriorly.
