Distribution

Recorded from off Dampier, Western Australia, and Coral Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, migrating vertically to above 75m during the night and to at least 1,500 m during the day.

Features

Dorsal fin 17-18; Anal fin 21-25. 
Body slender; chin barbel as long as head, pigmented with white spots, barbel tip white with a small spindle-shaped bulb a minute, rounded terminal body.

Etymology

Thysanactis is from the Greek thysanos = fringe or tassel, and aktis = ray, in reference to the isolated and produced pectoral-fin ray, with a tassel of 5 or 6 long unpigmented filaments.The specific name dentex refers to the long anterior fangs on both upper and lower jaws.
