Distribution

From off central Western Australia, to the Arafura Sea and Timor Seas, and from off Cape York, Queensland, to off central New South Wales. Elsewhere the species circumglobal in equatorial to warm temperate waters of the Atlantic and Indo-west Pacific.

Feeding

Mostlikely feeds on mesopelagic fishes and some crustaceans.

Stomias affinis Günther 1887, Rept Voyage of H.M.S. Challenger 1873–1876, Zoology 22(57): 205, pl. 54(A). Type locality: South of Sombrero Island, Challenger station 23, depth 450 fathoms.
