Summary:
A uniformly black anglerfish with the illicium (fishing apparatus) emerging just behind the eyes, and the esca (lure) having an anterior appendage usually bearing a compressed papilla and two tapering filaments on the distal end, papilla and filaments unpigmented.

Distribution |
Off Flinders Island, Tasmania to the Great Australian Bight, South Australia, south to Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean. Elsewhere, the species occurs in continental to Antarctic waters, and is known from Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters. Larvae are epipelagic, juveniles and adults are mesopelagic or bathypelagic. |
Features |
Females - Dorsal fin I + 5-7; Anal fin 4; Pectoral fin 17-19; Caudal fin 9. Body relatively short and stout, globose. Mouth large, horizontal to somewhat oblique; jaw teeth slender, recurved, depressible, those in lower jaw considerably larger and more numerous than those in upper. Eye small, sub-cutaneous. Gill opening oval, situated posterior to pectoral-fin base Esca with anterior appendage bearing a compressed papilla and several smaller papillae on distal tip, papillae darkly pigmented in specimens larger than about 40 mm SL. Posterior margin of upper portion of subopercle indented to deeply notched; ratio of lengths of upper and lower forks of opercle 0.42-0.54. Illicium (fishing apparatus) exposed, emerging on head from between frontal bones just posterior to eyes; posterior end of illicium protruding on dorsal midline of trunk just anterior to soft dorsal fin. Males - free living |
Etymology |
The specific name is from the Greek notios (= southern) in allusion to the distribution of this species, apparently restricted to the Southern Ocean. |
