Summary:
A mottled and variable reddish-brown scorpionfish with white patches, and often a darker triangular area below the eye that extends across the cheek. The Smallscale Scorpionfish has prominent skin tassels on the lower part of the head.

Distribution

Northwest Shelf, Western Australia, Cartier Island, Timor Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland; Also Christmas Island in teh eastern Indian Ocean. Inhabits coral and rocky areas on coastal and offshore reefs in depths to 43 m.

Scorpaena oxycephalus Bleeker 1849, Verhandelingen van het Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen 22: 7. Type locality: Jakarta, Java (as Batavia, Dutch East Indies).
