Summary:
A species of Satyrichthys with three lip and usually no (rarely two) chin barbels, no dusky spots on the head and body, antrose spines on upper lateral bony plates of the caudal peduncle, and the parietal bones of both sides on the dorsal mid-line are the same size.

Distribution

Off Exmouth, Western Australia, to Evans Shoal, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the east-Indo-west Pacific: Indonesia, East China Sea and Japan in depths of  192–420 m.

Etymology

[named for the Moluccas Islands in Indonesia].

Peristedion moluccense Bleeker 1850, Natuurkundig Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch Indië 1: 24  Type locality: Ambon, Indonesia, neotype (original type locality: New Britain Island, Bismarck Archipelago, Papua New Guinea).
