A blackish to purplish black deep-water lizardfish with very large eyes and slightly paler fins.

The species is southern circumglobal and has been recorded in Australia from the Tasman Sea off Sydney, New South Wales, to the Bonney Canyon off Robe, South Australia, including around seamounts south of Tasmania.
