Distribution |
Ningaloo Reef and offshore reefs of north Western Australia, Ashmore Reef in the Timor Sea, and the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland; also Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean, and the Lord Howe Province in the Tasman Sea. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific. Inhabits sandy, silty and gravel areas, usually with its head poking from the sand. |

The specific name is from the Latin marmorata (= marbled) in reference to the pattern of dark spots and large dark blotches on the body and fins. |
