Summary:
A deep-bodied black lanternfish with silvery sides, clear fins, 10–13 (usually 11–12) AO photophores, and the SAO1 photophore posterior to a vertical through the VO3 photophore.

Distribution

Britannia Tablemounts, off New South Wales, to off Hobart, Tasmania, and off Cape Bouvard, Western Australia. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal (except in the north-west Atlantic).
Inhabits bathypelagic, mesopelagic and epipelagic waters. Adults occur below 500 m during the day, migrating to 90 m to feed at night.

Features

Dorsal fin 13–15; Anal fin 18–20; Pectoral fin 14–17; Pelvic fin 8; Gill rakers 7–10 (usually 8–9) + 16–22 (usually 19–20).
Body depth less than 3 times in standard length (SL); AO photophores 10–13 (usually 11–12); SAO1 photophore posterior to vertical through VO3 photophore; males and females with single supracaudal or infracaudal organs or both, some females with double supracaudal and infracaudal organs.
