Summary:
A rusty-brown ghost flathead with pale grey dorsal fins, the upper front of pectoral fins rust-coloured, lower rear paler, free pectoral-fin rays white; white pelvic fins; upper, posterior and lower margins of caudal fin grey, and a small brown spot on the lower part of the caudal-fin base.

Similar Species |
Differs from other species of Hoplichthys in having the vomerine tooth patch constricted medially, mostly separating the vomerine teeth into bilaterally symmetrical patches. |
Etymology |
Named for Mark A. McGrouther, the collection manager of Ichthyology at the Australian Museum (AMS), for his valuable contributions to the taxonomy of the Hoplichthyidae. |
