Summary:
A mottled reddish to brown scorpionfish with four broad bars along the body, and a large black blotch on the rear of the spinous part of the dorsal fin.

Distribution

North West Shelf, Western Australia, and the Arafura Sea, Northern Territory. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical east-Indo-west Pacific: East Andaman Sea, Singapore, South China Sea.
Inhabits deep reefs and adjacent sandy and muddy areas.

Features

Dorsal fin XIII, 8-10; Anal fin III, 5; Pectoral fin 17-18. Suborbital bone with three spines.

Etymology

The species is named "in honour of the late Professor J. L. B. Smith for his noteworthy contributions to the knowledge of Indian Ocean scorpionfishes".
