Distribution |
Northern Exmouth Plateau, Western Australia, and the Lord How Rise northeast of Middleton Reef, and the Norfolk Ridge south of Norfolk Island. Elsewhere the species occurs in the tropical, Indo-west Pacific. |
Features |
Dorsal fin 21-28; Anal fin 35-43; Pelvic fin 6-8: Branchiostegal rays 5-7: Gill rakers 0-2 + 14-17 laterally, no rakers medially on first arch; Scales in longitudinal series above lateral line usually more than 190-270, 110-160 of which are predorsal; Pyloric caeca short, 3-8; Vertebrae 55-58, caudal vertebrae 36-38. Body low (depth less than 1/5 SL), without keel-like fold of skin in front of dorsal-fin origin; antero-lateral surface of premaxillaries with horizontally directed semicircular blade-like teeth piercing the skin; palatines toothed; antorbital bone absent; procurrent caudal-fin rays extend well forward above and below caudal peduncle beyond its midlength. |

Etymology |
The species is named in memory of Gerhard Krefft of the Institut für Seefischerei in Hamburg, Germany, for his contributions to the study of alepocephalid fishes of the Atlantic Ocean. |
