Summary:

Rough Anglerfish are a mottled greyish, brown to yellowish in colour to match their surroundings, and have a distinct spot at the base of the soft dorsal fin. The skin is roughly spinulated and the first dorsal-fin spine (illicium) is about equal in length to the long, slender 2nd dorsal-fin spine.

Kuiterichthys pietschi, a second species in the genus, was recently described from off northern New South Wales.

Distribution

Off Yamba, New South Wales, to off Esperance, Western Australia, including around Tasmania.

Etymology

The specific name furcipilis is derived from the Latin furcatus (= forked) and pilus (= hair), in reference to the bifurcate hair-​like dermal spinules covering the body.
Cuvier's vernacular name for this species was "La Chironecte a poils fourches", literally translated as "fork-skinned".
