Summary:

Rough Anglerfish are a mottled greyish, brown to yellowish in colour to match their surroundings, and have a distinct spot at the base of the soft dorsal fin. The skin is roughly spinulated and the first dorsal-fin spine (illicium) is about equal in length to the long, slender 2nd dorsal-fin spine.

Kuiterichthys pietschi, a second species in the genus, was recently described from off New South Wales.
