A fangjaw with a silvery gill cover and  peritoneum, with the the lower part of the tail transparent, and a single row of body photophores.

Distribution

Recorded from off northwestern Australia, and off north-eastern Tasmania. Elsewhere the species is circumglobal in tropical to temperate waters. Large individuals inhabit deeper waters that smaller fish.

Features

Dorsal fin 16-20; Anal fin 28-31; Pectoral-fin rays 14 to 16. 
Anal fin with elongate anterior rays. Single row of body photophores; OA photophores absent; photophores absent from isthmus.

Feeds on zooplankton
