Distribution |
Found in temperate midwaters of the Southwest Pacific, from the Tasman Sea off eastern Australia and New Zealand. Although usually benthopelagic over the continental shelf and slope, Kiwi hatchetfish have been collected in depths of 100-1000 metres. |

Dorsal fin 11-12 (usually 12); Anal fin 16-17; Pectoral fin 15-16; Gill rakers 16-17; Vertebrae 32-34 (usually 33); Anal photophores 7-10 (usually 7-9). Body deep, relatively robust, compressed, tapering abruptly to a short caudal peduncle; eye very large, laterally-focused eye; post-temporal spine short, simple; abdominal keel scales smooth, not extended ventrally. First and third supra-abdominal photophores about even, raised well above second; first supra-anal photophore distinctly lower than second, which is slightly lower than third. |
